Overview

This course combines regular classroom sessions with a field experience in (at the student’s choosing) either Berlin or the U.S. (Washington, D.C.).

During seven classrooms sessions, students examine the evolution of the museum and the relevant management issues.

Topics include questions such as: What are the origins of the public museum? How do museums function and operate? How are museums managed? What challenges do museums face in the 21st century? Special focus areas are: art plunder and recuperation, museum architecture, display strategies & technologies, museum marketing, and the impact of virtual media. Exclusive visual materials with in-depth interviews will be shown during the class. Students will pre-research the museums assigned for the field trip.

FIELD TRIP TO BERLIN

Why Berlin? Since the fall of the Wall, Berlin has come back as a pulsing hub of the Western art scene. The city is considered a hotbed of contemporary visual arts and music.

With more than 175 museums, spanning more than 200 years of museum history, the German capital is a must for anyone who is “in” to museums. The city of Berlin is one of the few places in the world where one literally can retrace the evolution of the museum, from its origins as the royal collections in the palaces, which are still intact as museums, to today’s state-of-the-art contemporary museums and futuristic museum plans for the mid-21st century.

In Berlin, participants will conduct practical, hands-on research at four landmark museums, culminating in a final project of one or two case studies. You will participate in expert guided museum tours and meet with museum officials to further substantiate your explorations with behind-the-scenes insights.

Everyone will have ample opportunities to explore the city on his or her own, taking advantage of the astounding cultural variety that Berlin has to offer.

Program Fee: $1,530, which includes double -occupancy lodging (single occupancy can be arranged for additional fee), daily breakfast, welcome and farewell dinners, ground transportation, city and several museum tours, entrance fees. Course fee does not include airfare and tuition.

Registration for this class is through PatriotWeb and listed as AMGT 599 – 006. Course fees apply.

For AMGT 599 – 007, instead of the field trip to Berlin, a U.S. field component can be elected with this course.
