The Lucy Burns Museum at the Workhouse Arts Center seeks Coordinator

The primary function of this position is to assist the Director in the planning and execution of daily museum functions; including but not limited to exhibit research and installation, preservation and cataloguing of existing collections, engaging with docents and visitors, scheduling tours, and performing clerical and other museum-related duties as required. This position requires excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently, and acts in a confidential capacity and serves as a point of contact in the absence of Director.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Collections:

  • Assist with processing and cataloging new acquisitions and loans
  • Assist with the creation and management of collections records and documentation, both physical and digital utilizing PastPerfect software

Exhibitions:

  • Conduct research on topics relevant to the history of the Workhouse
  • Help prepare museum exhibits and collections for public display

Programs/Education:

  • Assist in the creation of new public program initiatives
  • Staff programs and events as needed

Operations:

  • Staff information desk and giftshop as needed, welcoming visitors and responding to questions
  • Execute administrative duties, including but not limited to filing, copying, running errands, general data entry

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the museum field, current museum practices, and artifact preservation and conservation standards

  • Organizational Support: Supports the WAF’s goals and values. Follows and supports policies and procedures. Completes administrative tasks correctly and on time. Responds to management direction and follows instruction, as appropriate. 
  • Interpersonal Skills and Teamwork: Exhibits strong interpersonal skills. Works well with others to support the successful operations of the Workhouse Arts Foundation, Inc. and the Workhouse Arts Center. Represents museum aspects of operations on project teams and day-to-day cross-organizational activities. Uses interpersonal skills to work through complex issues regarding museum management with other staff and come to a positive resolution of issues. 
  • Oral/Written Communication Skills: Speaks and writes clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations. Listens and gets clarification. Represents the organization professionally. 
  • Computer skills: Computer application competency with MS Outlook, Excel, and Word, Adobe, and basic understanding of CAD applications.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Museum Studies, American Studies, History, or closely related field; Master’s preferred 
  • 2 plus years of experience with collections management in museums or other cultural institutions 
  • Experience in providing excellent customer service and/or visitor services, in a cultural institution or museum preferred 
  • Weekend work required – standard hours for this position include being onsite Saturdays and Sundays
