Spring 2022 Friends of Music Internship at Mason

Location: Remote, with some events at Fairfax and SciTech campuses
Supervisor: Linda Harber, President, Friends of Music at Mason
Dates: November 2021-May 2022 Hours: Flexible, 10-15/week
Stipend: Unpaid, but can be counted for credit

The Friends of Music at Mason seeks an intern for the Spring 2022 semester. The intern will learn about donor relations, communications, events, and outreach through working with George Mason University’s most dedicated supporters of the School of Music (SOM) and the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ development professionals.

This intern will work directly with the officers of the Friends of Music at Mason and CVPA development team on tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Communications/Donor Relations

    • Assisting Managing Editor of the Friends of Music newsletter with MailChimp
    • Canvassing SOM artists to submit videos for consideration; organizing submissions and formatting “Friday Musical Moments” MailChimp emails
    • Assisting with cleaning up and organizing lists by affinity for targeted emailing
    • Creating documents to share with Friends and donors
    • Attending FOMM monthly board meetings and taking minutes
    • Creating and posting social media content including videos and graphics
    • Working on effective FOMM branding for all materials and posts
    • Assisting with assembling mailings for fundraising, stewardship, etc.
  • Diversity/Outreach
    • Researching and reaching out to community groups, campus organizations, senior living residencies, libraries, etc. with a goal of getting them to attend and/or screen Mason music events and performances
    • Working with FOMM board to attract more diverse members and audiences for School of Music performances
    • Attending external meetings as an FOMM representative with collaborative partners (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Mason Community Arts Academy)
    • Providing student feedback to plans and marketing and consider ways to engage more music students and Friends
  • Events
    • Assisting in planning, marketing, and execution of FOMM special events (virtual and in-person)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate is a strong, detail-oriented writer who loves connecting with people. They will have the ability to manage their time wisely to keep track of simultaneous projects. They will be interested in flexing their creative muscles for social media content and willing to send emails and make phone calls to establish new connections. This intern will need to have access to a reliable computer and internet connection. This position may sometimes include attendance at events outside of business hours.
